Church Growth Secret: Free Cheese Curds

Renovation Church in Blaine, Minnesota, tried something different this past weekend at Sunday service: free cheese curds.

Pastor David Sorn says the church was so excited about the project they advertised with postcards, street signs and four electronic billboards. The church staff also set two URLs that directed people to an information page on the church's website. The church website averaged more than 500 hits a day. But why cheese curds?

"We did cheese curds because they are super popular in Minnesota," Sorn said. "It was also at the same time of the Minnesota state fair and cheese curds are the most popular item there."

Along with cheese curds, after services staff gave out mini donuts, kettle corn, shaved ice and roasted corn. The cheese curd giveaway grew church attendance by 170.

"We saw 75 first time guests and 10 people stand up and give their lives to Jesus Christ," Sorn said. "We're so grateful that God is using us to share the gospel and change the world."
